What happened to spell range?

A novice wizard casts short-range spells. As he/she gain experience levels, he/she feels magic flowing stronger and stronger through his/her body, and magic missiles flow farther and farther. This simple idea was translated (between Pathfinder and D&D 3.5) into the rule that increased spells’ range 3 mt (10 ft) per experience level (or less, in some cases).
